It's been six months since Neal blurted out a proposal in the middle of screwing on the kitchen table (which she has scrubbed several times since then, to make sure it's clean), and he never took it back as just something he'd said in the heat of the moment, so now they're actually going ahead with this. She would have been happy with just going down to the courthouse, but Neal had wanted something more than that, and eventually she'd agreed, although she didn't see the point.

Neal had chosen the venue, since it was his idea anyway, and they put together a small guest list. Mainly just coworkers and neighbors, since neither of them has any family to invite. Once the wedding is over, they can start saving for a bigger place, and Henry can have a room of his own.

She found a simple dress that didn't cost too much, and as she hears the music play, she starts down the aisle to where Neal and Henry are waiting for her.

The day she had never expected to have is here.

Neal would have never taken back his proposal. The truth was that he'd been thinking about it for a long time, had even gotten a ring, but had been waiting for the right moment to ask her. He hadn't been able to wait and had blurted out the question at what could possibly considered the worst time ever.

Luckily for Neal, Emma had said yes.

He knew that she didn't want anything too big but he wanted to make sure she felt like the princess that she was. He had gotten the permits to have the event in the park. It was a very small ceremony with maybe 15 people in attendance. Henry was at the alter by his side, as his co best man, being held by his best man who happened to be a friend from work.

This was the happiest day of his life.

When the music started everyone turned towards Emma, Neal wearing the biggest smile of them all. When she arrived at the alter he was grinning like a fool in love. "You look beautiful." He spoke softly before the short ceremony began. Neal didn't ask for anything long, knowing that Emma wouldn't be comfortable standing up in front of so many people for so long but he had worked very hard on his vows and he wanted the world to hear them.

"Emma. I was lost before I met you. You are the compass, pointing me in the right direction and the light that chases away the darkness. I draw strength from your strength and courage from your stubbornness. You're infuriating at times but I love that too. I give you everything I have, which is only me." He laughed feeling a little bashful as a soft echo of laughter moved through their guests. "I want us to be a family. For sickness and health and whatever other challenges we might face. I will be at your side. You and Henry."

It was important for Neal to have Henry there and to make it clear that he wasn't only going to be a wonderful husband but a fantastic father too.

Emma can't believe that this is happening. That in a few short minutes she will be a wife. That there's someone who wants to marry her.

That she finally has the family she always wanted.

"I grew up thinking that since no one wanted me, no one ever would. Then I met you, and I have never doubted you for a day since then. We've had so much already, and I can't wait to see what comes next."

Neal flashed her a warm smile as their officiator continued. He wasn't really paying attention to what was said, all he heard was 'you may now kiss the bride'

"Don't mind if I do." He smiled at her before pulling her protectively in his arms and kissing her. They've kissed a million times before but it was nothing like this. All of his love and affection was in this kiss and he wanted the world to know how much he adored the woman in his arms.

"I love you." He said as their kiss broke and the crowd cheered.

"I love you too." She doesn't even mind saying it in front of this many people, some almost strangers, because this is her day, and it's the day they officially become a family. She's saying it to her son, too. Not just that she loves him, but that she loves his father and is willing to make this commitment to them being a family.

For Emma, that's a huge deal.

"Now let's get our son back and go have some food."

Neal laughed softly as he brushed a bit of golden hair behind her ear. "Of course." He was looking forward to continuing his life at Emma's side.

He didn't see this as a start, the start to his life was the moment they both tried to steal the same yellow car. Things have been hectic since then. They were thieves for a while but after the incident with the watches and Neal's run in with August, they decided that they needed to settle down and stop thieving. It had been difficult for Neal but he'd move the world for Emma if he could.

Neal stepped over to where Henry was being held and lifted his son into his arms. He held him with one hand before wrapping his other hand around Emma's thin waist. "After you."

This was the happiest moment of his life.

Well, now it's done and there's no taking it back. She's someone's wife, which she had honestly never expected would happen. A wife and mother, no less. She'd never really had examples of either in her life and just hopes that she can do this without messing it up.

She wraps her arm around Neal's waist in return. "We'll go together. It's a party for both of us."

"Yeah." He chuckled softly as he leaned forward to kiss Emma again. There was no way that Neal could have enough of Emma. She wasn't perfect. He didn't believe that anyone was but all of her imperfections made him love her even more.

"There's going to be a small party at the dinner." It was cheap and more their style than anything big and fancy.

"Ready?" Neal asked as he lead Emma to the car.

"Ready." She opens the door and moves the seat forward to put her flowers in the back, next to Henry's car seat. They're probably going to have to start saving for a different car, too. One with actual back doors. It would be more convenient, and safer. "Is Henry ready?"

"Good." He flashed a warm smile as he leaned into the car with Henry. He checked Henry's seat to make sure that it was secure before turning back to Emma with his eager puppy like smile.

"Henry's ready. Let's go."

Neal pulled himself up right and pushed the seat back so they could head out.

He quickly kisses Emma on the cheek before heading to the dinner where they have the party laid out for them and the guests.

Once they're at the diner, Emma does her best to make sure to mingle with all of the guests, but Neal is much more the social person than she is. She'd much rather settle in a booth with Henry and let the guests come to her. Especially since this had all been Neal's idea in the first place.

But she'll manage.

Neal tried his best to run interference for Emma. It was like football but probably far more entertaining for Emma to watch than Neal to act out. He would intercept those who spent to long around her and try to allow her time to relax while he filled their social obligation.

It was crazy.

As the clock stuck nine Neal stepped up to Emma with a smile, slipping next to her in the booth.

"It's almost time for us to make our mistake. Henry's sitter is here. You okay to leave him?" It was only for one night but Neal had wanted time with Emma without the baby.

"No," she says as she leans her head against Neal's shoulder. She's been away from him for hours at a time after she went back to work, but not overnight yet. She's not sure she's ready for that. Or that she'll ever be ready for that, really. But it would be nice to spend tonight with just Neal. "But we can go anyway."

Neal kissed her forehead before offering her a light hug. "Say goodbye to Henry and then we'll go." He didn't want to push Emma but they needed the time and the space. After tonight it would never be just the two of them again.

"I'll grab our ride and get the sitter." With that, Neal slipped from the booth to give Emma a few moments with her son.

While Neal is getting ready to go, Emma tickles Henry's tummy, causing him to kick his feet in the air with a giggle. "You're not going to go home with us tonight, but that doesn't mean we don't still love you. We'll see you tomorrow." As soon as she gets up. She's not being apart from Henry any longer than she has to.

She boops Henry on the nose. "We'll see you tomorrow, little man. You be good for your babysitter."

Neal walked over with a middle aged woman walking at his heels.

He smiled at Emma and Henry before leaning forward to speak to them both. "It's just for one night. It'll be fine." Henry will sleep through most of the time that Emma and Neal are gone. "Come on. The car is waiting. This is misses Frederickson. She'll take good care of Henry. We'll be picking him up first thing in the morning."

After breakfast.

Well. She looks like she knows what to do with a baby, at least, which is something. But Emma still needs to know a little more before she agrees to leave her son alone with this woman.

"How did you find her?" she asks Neal. Some random person he heard about somewhere? Not taking of her son.

"She's Jame's wife. You know the tech guy in my office. They have two kids: 6 and 4. And a lot of experience with babies. He'll be fine. I wouldn't trust him with anyone I didn't trust." The fact that he knew and worked with her husband and knew that they had two kids was the only reason Neal had asked her.

"She runs a day care in the afternoons. I thought if this goes well we'll be able to put Henry there before preschool." It was evident that this was something they'd talk about years down the road by the way that Neal spoke.

"If you have any questions I'm sure she's happy to answer them?" Neal stepped to the side allowing the woman to step forward. "Yes. I know how hard it is to leave him but you deserve tonight. I have both of your numbers in case I need to reach you."

Well. Okay. Maybe she knows how to take care of her baby. Emma knows Neal's right, this is a night for them, and they should have it. She turns back to Henry and strokes his hand. "Okay. You be good for your babysitters. We'll see you tomorrow."

Neal waited until Emma was done saying goodbye to Henry before taking her by the hand and leading her out towards the car. He didn't rush her but the moment they were out of sight he pulled her into his arms, placing a very eager kiss against her lips.

"You're beautiful."

She rests her hands lightly against his chest while he kisses her, and responds with a smile. "Keep up talking like that and you won't be sleeping much tonight."

Except he will, because she will, because it's their first night without a baby to keep them up.

"That is the plan." He admits with a cocky grin. While Neal and Emma's meeting hadn't been the sort that's written about in a story book, Neal will never forget that she called him a pervert. In a way, he tried to live up to that though he was always very playful in his advances and it was only when it was the two of them alone.

"Just remember I have to drive there." He turned over the engine and took off towards their hotel. It wasn't a perfect place, it wasn't very far either, but they'd be alone and the window had a nice view of the New York City skyline.

"You are a pervert." But she married him anyway, so it's obviously not that big of a deal. "If you have any issues with driving, it's your problem, nothing caused by me."

"Yes but I'm your pervert." He smiled over at her and pressed his lips against her cheek.

Neal can totally do that and drive.

"Well I should have picked one who knows to keep his eyes on the road when he's driving." They don't want to make Henry an orphan or something, Neal.

"We'll have time for that later."

Neal turned his eyes back towards the road at Emma's thinly veiled command. "As you wish." His voice was light and warm. There was nothing in the world that could upset his happy mood today. He was with the woman he loved, they were married and going to start a family together.

It'd been a long journey to get here, one that Neal hadn't thought possible.

"Mmm." He hummed softly. "How much later?"

As he asked he pulled into the hotel parking lot, cut the engine and pulled the parking break.
